An original novella in the “fast-paced, exciting military SF series”* featuring Kris Longknife.

Kris Longknife is back home from her galactic adventures, but her entire Fleet of Discovery has been annihilated. Now, humanity finds itself at war with an alien race more monstrous than anyone could have possibly imagined.

General Terrance “Trouble” Tordon, Kris’s great-grandfather, is given the task of calming the panicked politicians, some of whom blame Kris for the disaster and would like to eliminate the ever bothersome Commander Longknife.

But as “Trouble” struggles to defend his Kris, the level of uncertainty among the civilians leads to more panic and a rush to judgment that makes him believe that he’s facing a fight he’s bound to lose…

Includes a preview of the newest Kris Longknife novel, Furious, available November 2012.

Kris Longknife Welcome Home / Go Away Kris Longknife Series eBook Mike Shepherd

ok, folks who bought it without reading that it was a short have only their own lack of attention to blame. It's a short, it was labeled as such. I agree it's a bit pricey for the length, but I got it on a whim because I've read the rest of the series, and honestly three bucks is less than a cup of coffee at the evil empire. OK, misplaced grousing aside, I think this is quite enjoyable, and actually well written. The first Longknife books were fun fluff that were not terribly well written, but over time the author has really improved. I think this is not only a fun visit with some characters we know, but is written better than the bulk of the new ebooks (and I read a *lot*). It's from a different POV than before, and has a more complicated presentation in several respects, yet has a nice clarity and flow to it. So, kudos for the author's continued growth, and buy it if you like the Longknife space opera stories...and don't whine that it's a short. I think the writing here is quite good, possibly at the same level overall as John Scalzi (who is darn good).

Kris Longknife Welcome Home / Go Away Kris Longknife Series eBook Mike Shepherd Reviews

Great story of insights on the character you grow to love in the series. Grandpa Trouble and Ray are wonderful characters. Everyone loves Grandma Ruth.
It is certainly interesting to get an inside POV of the 'Unholy Trinity'. This has always been deliberately opaque for obvious storytelling reasons. Their actions and motives had to stretch plausibility and it was better to section it off so it was easier to suspend disbelief. Unfortunately the stretch is a huge one with the end of 'Daring' and the beginning of 'Furious'. Showing some of the internal tensions and human failings of the leaders works to a degree, although Crossie is getting increasingly hard to swallow.

I'm as willing as most to let the yarn carry me past a lot of glaring holes but too many here jump out at you and make it hard to willingly gloss over.

If Ray is so totally incapable of getting a politically spun version of the events out to massage public opinion his way, how is it that he able to engineer a total media shutdown of discussion in "KL Furious"?

What could possibly be his percentage in allowing a negative picture of the events to permeate his own armed forces and those of other star groupings?

This snippet helps but leaves too many questions unanswered, particularly when followed by the about face at the end of "Furious"
Love the characters, great suspense, great story telling. Once I started, I ran through everything he wrote. Maybe it is because I identify with that "well someone has to do it, so guess I better get busy and do it" mentality. Actually, I guess that is the original American mentality before we turned into a nation with half the people wanting the government to do it all for them. I vote for the rugged individual!
This story is an excellent fill between Kris Longknife Daring and the sequel, Furious. It also gives the reader of this series a good glimpse of the relationship between Trouble and Ruth Longknife in Kris's life time - enjoy.
This is a short story that fills in the story line between two books. It is enjoyable except for the reader's version of Grandpa Trouble's voice. The singsong diction is NOT the voice of General Tordon aka Grandpa Trouble "trouble to his enemy and trouble to his friends"
Welcome Home/Go Away is clearly labeled as a novella both in the back of the books and online in the store.

Some of the "reviews" authors are either unaware of what a novella is (clue - it isn't a full length book) or they are the same people who order off the McDonalds Dollar menu then complain that the hamburger they get isn't as big and doesn't contain all the stuffings a Whopper does.

Welcome Home/Go Away gives the reader a bit of the picture of what was going on back home while the reader was along for the ride in Daring.
I am a big fan of Mike Shepherd (Moscoe) & especially enjoy his Kris Longknife books.
That's why I am not giving this e-book my usual five (5) rating.
This was not what I have come to expect from Mike.
Actually, the eBook seemed like it a bunch of old chapters left over from the series or edited out.. Then, put together to make an ebook.. (the way they made pink panther movies after Sellers died, from out-takes of old movies.)
But it is still worth a four!
Please don't judge the series on this one eBook,
No more than you should judge the author only on my review!
The rest of the Longknife books are Great.
